State of affairs

The Alpha release was riddled with bugs, and the app launched without any user testing. There was a clear lack of alignment across teams—from Engineering to Product Management to Design—which was evident in the product.

First Version of the App
Getting the team on the same page was key, so I pushed for some user testing on the current app to keep our decisions data-driven. This helped us spot real user pain points and figure out our short-term vs. long-term priorities.

pain points
Clip Durations: No clear indication of clip or trim lengths.
Timeline Sync: Inconsistent timeline visibility made layer timing difficult.
Play/Pause Issues: Unclear play/pause controls with missing icons and visibility issues.

The original design was functional, but it felt a bit cluttered. It had both the main toolbar and all its subsets visible on the screen at the same time, which meant everything was competing for attention. It made things feel busy and visually overwhelming.

short term fixes

In the redesign, I moved all of the controls to the bottom, only showing the tools that are relevant at any given moment. This made the interface visually cleaner and much easier to navigate. I also added labels to the icons, which created an extra layer of clarity.

Old Version vs New Redesign
Another big improvement was increasing the workspace area. By expanding the space at the bottom, I was able to keep the timeline visible permanently, This makes editing feel much more easier since you have that constant overview.

The play and pause buttons were made clearer by using prominent icons that stayed on screen at all times, making the interaction consistent.

Timing Layers Old vs New
Timing elements to clips was a massive pain point for users - by having the timeline exposed it allowed users to better visually connect how the layers, text and other elements would sit in the edit.

LONG TERM IMPROVEMENTS
07 /
Working with the PM and Engineering Lead, we explored future app improvements, including a visual timeline with thumbnails for clearer navigation, a movable toolbar to maximize workspace, and an undo/redo feature based on user feedback. We also proposed timestamps on the timeline for precise edits and color-coded layers to simplify managing complex projects.
